Gold Karat Guide: 24K to 10K Purity, Hallmarks, and Real Shop Pricing

How purity turns into per-gram value, why 22K dominates Indian bridal counters, how 21K fits Gulf shelves, and how scrap spreads ignore the making charges you paid years ago.

Customers hear “22K” and “18K” as style labels. Traders hear purity fractions that decide melt value. The gap between those two ears is where households overpay, undersell, or walk out of a shop feeling misled by a number that was technically “correct” and still incomplete.

This guide stays inside jewelry-market practice: hallmark checks, making-charge behaviour in India and the Gulf, GST/VAT lines that change all-in cost, and buy-back arithmetic that quietly deletes old making charges from the conversation.

Karat as a fraction, not a fashion code

Twenty-four karat is treated as pure gold for practical discussion. Each karat is one twenty-fourth of the whole. So 18K is 75% gold, 22K is 22/24 ≈ 91.67% (usually 91.6% in retail math), 14K is about 58.3–58.5% depending on the standard used. Bullion markets also speak in fineness—999 or 995—meaning parts per thousand. Same idea, different dialect.

Wholesale bars accepted under LBMA Good Delivery conventions are high-purity investment metal. Jewelry karats live downstream of that world: same element, different job.

Why jewelers alloy gold

Pure gold is soft. A 24K ring worn daily bends and takes scratches. Copper, silver, palladium, zinc, and other metals add strength and shift colour. Alloyed gold is still gold. Lower karat is not a synonym for fake; it is a different engineering choice than a 9999 bar.

What people actually buy by region

India and 22K

Indian bridal and festival demand still orbits 22K yellow gold. Families compare rupees per gram on city boards, then negotiate making charges. BIS hallmarking and HUID identification improved the consumer’s ability to verify purity marks, but they did not abolish the need to read making and GST lines. A hallmarked 22K piece can still be an expensive or inexpensive purchase depending on labour, brand, and stones.

Gulf markets and 21K / 22K

In Dubai and neighboring markets, 21K and 22K both appear widely. Tourists often fixate on the board rate and miss whether making is quoted per gram or as a percentage, and whether VAT applies to that product category. Shop-to-shop competition can make plain goods easier to compare; ornate bridal work remains a different market entirely.

Europe and 18K

European fine jewelry leans heavily on 18K for branded and gemstone pieces. VAT treatment often separates qualifying investment gold from jewelry, so an 18K fashion purchase and a bullion coin are not the same tax object even if both contain gold.

The melt formula shops start from

Local melt-oriented karat price per gram ≈ (USD spot per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768 × FX rate) × purity. Multiply by weight for melt value. Add making and tax for a retail-style estimate. If a salesperson cannot walk that chain on paper, you are negotiating without a map.

BIS hallmarking in India: what changed for buyers

Mandatory hallmarking expansion and HUID-linked marks gave Indian buyers a clearer purity trail on many jewelry items. In practice, that means:

  • Ask to see the hallmark and HUID where applicable before paying.
  • Match the stamped karat to the invoice description.
  • Remember hallmarking certifies purity standards—it does not cap making charges.
  • Old jewelry without modern marks may face tighter buy-back scrutiny or re-assay.

Hallmark discipline raised baseline trust. It did not eliminate under-carating fraud everywhere, nor did it make every exchange scheme automatically fair. Verification still beats assumption.

Making charges: India vs Dubai patterns

In Indian showrooms, making is often the main negotiation lever once the gold rate is acknowledged. Plain items may advertise single-digit making percentages; hand-finished bridal work can climb into high teens or beyond, especially with complex settings. National chains sometimes publish making slabs by product code—useful, if you still check wastage clauses and stone lines.

In Dubai’s competitive souk environment, a shopper can compare making on simple chains from several counters. That comparison does not make heavy handmade sets equivalent to machine-made goods. A custom-work quote may also keep its agreed making terms when spot changes, so ask which parts of the price are fixed and which are live.

GST, VAT, and the karat conversation

Purity decides metal content. Tax decides whether the state takes a share of the ticket. In India, GST lines on jewelry invoices should be readable beside gold value and making. In the UAE, confirm whether a product is sold under rules aimed at investment bullion or as standard jewelry—VAT outcomes differ. In the EU/UK, qualifying investment gold can sit outside normal jewelry VAT paths. Mixing these regimes in your head produces false “arbitrage” stories that die on the receipt.

Scrap buy-back: purity matters, old making usually does not

A buy-back offer on 22K scrap is mostly purity × weight × local metal reference × (1 − buy spread). The making you paid in 2019 is almost irrelevant to a melt buyer. Branded designer 18K may find a secondary jewelry resale channel instead of pure scrap—sometimes. Broken plain bangles almost always fall to melt logic.

Currency loss and karat choice

When INR softens, rupee prices of every karat rise even if USD spot is flat. Households sometimes “downgrade” from 22K to 18K or reduce grams to hit a budget. That can be rational for wearables if durability and design matter more than pure content. It is less rational if the goal was maximum gold grams for long-term metal exposure—then smaller 24K/22K bullion or plainer jewelry may fit better than high-making low-weight fashion pieces.

In dollar-pegged AED markets, the karat decision is less about FX translation and more about tradition, colour, and making. In EUR markets, euro weakness acts like the INR channel: local-currency grams move even when the dollar ounce sleeps.

Futures noise vs jewelry fabrication lead times

Custom bridal jewelry has fabrication lead times measured in days or weeks. Chasing a two-hour dip on a COMEX rollover rarely changes the making schedule already agreed with a karigar or brand workshop. Spot context helps you avoid buying panic at the absolute top of a spike; it does not micro-optimize a handmade set mid-production.

Myths that still cost money

  • Higher karat is always better—better for pure content, not always for a thin daily ring.
  • Lower karat means fake—false.
  • Hallmark stamps are impossible to fake or misread—treat them as strong evidence, still verify high-value deals.
  • Online karat cards include boutique making—usually they show metal references only.

Checklist before a karat-sensitive purchase

  1. Confirm stamped purity and net gold weight.
  2. Separate metal, making, stones, and tax on the quote.
  3. Compare metal line with a live reference (strip above).
  4. In India, review BIS/HUID details where relevant.
  5. In UAE/EU/UK, confirm VAT category for the product type.
  6. For sell-backs, expect melt-minus-spread logic unless a true design resale channel exists.
